These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

About 15 years ago Ruth, Gisele, Kathy (my Dinner Club friends) and I went to Bermuda and rented a two-bedroom condo over Memorial Day weekend. Ruth and I shared a room, and the first morning we were there she laughingly asked, "do you realize you have put on six different lotions and potions since you got out of the shower?" Ever since then I refer to my toiletries as my Lotions & Potions.

This morning as I was performing my toilette I was thinking back to when I was a teenager and we didn't have all this stuff. As I methodically reached for each product in its turn I started to count.

Of course in the shower it was the body soap and exfoliant for my face and body. When I got out of the shower it began with the cotton swab.

Then the lotions, not all after a shower but there's deodorant, eye cream, lip balm, morning face moisturizer, night-time face moisturizer, sunblock, hand lotion, body lotion, foot lotion. Then the teeth: mouth wash, floss, plaque rinse, tooth whiteners, toothpaste. Then there's the hair products: shampoo, conditioner, detangler, thickener, root lifter, curl booster, hairspray.

Is it any wonder my luggage is always over the weight limit when I fly?! I try to cut back on all this stuff when I travel but I NEED it; I really do! And I haven't even gotten to the makeup yet which I won't list because honestly I don't use a lot of makeup but there's still a handful of those products, too.

And quite honestly when I look in the mirror, I'm not sure I'm getting my money's worth.

Men don't have a clue how easy they've got it.

This cracks me up. I tend to go in cycles in the use of "lotions and potions" I have to use shower gel, not bar soap. I use a moisturizer on my face and an eye gel, I rarely leave the house without makeup, only to maybe drop off my youngest at school, where I am wearing shades and never leave the car. I'm on and off with other lotions and preps..........but you are right, my husband never uses conditioner, shaves, uses witch hazel, and a tiny bit of moisturizer and some hairspray and he is done!

I'm fairly low maintenance myself mostly because I'm cheap. All those products can sap your wallet and mine has barely any juice left in it as it is.

M, I've never considered myself high maintenance but my list of lotions & potions might say otherwise!

I have the same problem when I travel. I use all sample size containers, I leave everything except the absolute essentials behind and my toiletries still take up half my suitcase. Of course, we travel very light and each take one small (and I do mean small) suitcase. But, still. Luckily, Geoff uses hardly any products and I can usually get him to carry some of my toiletries. Works for me. Then I have more room for an extra pair of shoes (or 2).

We do use a lot of stuff, don't we? And I forget to bring half of it when I go out of town. Too much for this old brain to remember.

Root lifter? I'm so not a girl. I don't even know what that is.

I've done well to slap moisturiser on my face when I get out of the shower!

I'll have to check - I think maybe I'm a dude... (I'm a pretty basic chickadee...)

Truer words have never been spoken! I KNOW I'm not getting my money's worth. I am a sucker for buying any new lotion and potion I come across!

PS I love your book montage. :)
