Where oh Where Did the Doggie Bowls Go

Here's a real head-scratcher for you.....someone or something stole the dogs' dishes. From the deck.

I got home from work yesterday and Paul asked, "Do you know where the dogs' bowls are?" I remember picking them up, nesting Lucy's little bowl into Rosey's bigger bowl and moving them. Maybe that was this morning, maybe yesterday. I probably opened the kitchen slider and set them on the deck. Well, they aren't there.

We looked everywhere. Everywhere they might be (garage, mudroom, lawn) and a few places they shouldn't be (refrigerator, stove, broom closet, basement) and they are nowhere to be found. Why would someone come up onto my deck at the rear of the house and take dog dishes? One is turquoise plastic and the other is aluminum (in case you see them and need a description to identify them) certainly nothing special.

As of October 1 we have lived in this house for 23 years. Nothing like dog-bowl theft has ever happened. Our house is on a couple acres and is set about 150' off the road and backs up to woods beyond our property line. We do have neighbors on each side. The people on the south side were there when we moved in, the neighbors on the north are new last year. We're not thrilled with the new people; they're noisy and messy and a little weird but can't imagine them coming onto the property, up onto the deck to steal two old dog bowls.

A little weird, no?

Postscript: The dogs' dishes have not shown up. Several people have suggested that another dog or coyote might have made off with them. If it was just Lucy's litle plastic dish I might agree but Rosie's was aluminum and animals don't like to pick up metal so I'm going with the new neighbors as the likely culprits. I think they're just messing with us. Creepy.

Yes, that is a little weird. I say go over to the new neighbors and casually take something from the yard or deck. Then, if your bowls return, you return the item. Is that stealing? Wait, better not steal. Instead talk relentlessly about your missing dog bowls to them. Make every topic come back to the dog bowls. All right, so maybe they didn't take them but, this will teach them to keep a nice distance.

Could critters other than dogs have made their way to your porch and decided to scavenge? Does that happen?

Hmmm. Very strange!

Personally, I think critters COULD scavenge them. When I lived in Ohio, on a small city tract, my little cat food bowls would disappear, sometimes never to be seen again! Sometimes I would find them some distance away, behind my front bushes or in my flower beds. Which led me to believe some critter (raccoon? opossum?) was walking away with them!

I swore up and down that my mother stole my cheese grater only to find it between the cabinet and the dishwasher. I bet those dog bowls are playing hide and seek like my cheese grater.

ps. I still haven't told my mom I found it. I want her to think she stole it. I like screwing with her head.

That is a little more than a little weird.

Hope they turn up soon!

That is strange. Why would anyone even want them? We had two potted plants stolen from out front around Mother's Day.

I'd be questioning the dogs first. But that's only because our dog eats his dish (along with everything else in the yard.)

That is more than a little weird. Good luck on cracking the case.

I'm with Tammy and the other commenters who think an animal took them. A coyote maybe? Or another dog?

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe another dog took off with them as big chew toys or something?

I'd prefer to think that an animal took them rather than a human! That's just kind of gross - stealing used dog bowls...

OMG, you don't have raccoons who think your dog's bowls are the new thing to have do you, LOL??
That would give me the creeps.

I'd guess an animal too. My parents have lots of coyotes, raccoons, and stray dogs around. Weird, though!

Wow, very odd. Sadly I have no theories.

Strange indeed! Who knows what happened to them. Some time down the road you may find them in a very odd place :)

Have a great Spirit Sunday!

I bet it was a raccoon! They are sneaky little guys and I can't tell you how many times I've caught them on our front deck...stealing kibble from our pets! They make such a ruckus and although they've never taken off with a bowl...I wouldn't put it past them. I try to pull the bowls when it gets dark, now...so as not to tempt them.
Check the woods. Or across the road in a ditch. :D Happy days to you!
