On The Road Again

Paul and I recently made our annual trek to OBX, the outer banks of North Carolina. The photo on the right was a stallion following along behind his mares and a foal on the beach one day we were there. We didn't see too many wild horses this year.

This is our third year at OBX since buying a timeshare in Kitty Hawk on eBay, sight unseen. Not only had we never seen the condo, neither Paul nor I had ever been to OBX.

During the week of the auction I did some serious Internet research but it was still a leap of faith when I kept increasing my bid in those last minutes of the auction and then won. It turned out to be a great buy. The condo is beautiful and in a great spot. We start looking forward to it every March when we've had just about enough winter.

This year we left a couple days early and extended our vacation. On the way to OBX we stopped in Ocean City, Maryland, for what we expected would be a quiet couple days in an oceanfront hotel. Here's the view from our balcony. This is peaceful but it tells you nothing about what was going on in front of the hotel.

We had no idea that the week we picked to stop in Ocean City was the same week that the 20th Annual Cruisin' Ocean City was happening. On the way down we kept noticing classic cars on the road. We figured there was probably a car show somewhere south but didn't know we were heading right into it.

Right into it is right. The town was full of hot rods, custom cars and street machines of every vintage, make, model, color and style. They drove up and down the main drag called Coastal Highway. And anywhere there was a parking lot along the street you would see cars parked with some people sitting in canvas chairs and others wandering from car to car looking under the hoods.

Plus there were people lined up on the sidewalks along the street watching the impromptu parade.

The show is open to cars built in 1979 or earlier. The formal registration is limited to 3,000 but a total of about 7,000 cars show up and the weekend draws 100,000 people. It's based at the local Convention Center but spills everywhere in town.

Paul was in his glory. A 'gearhead' in his teens and twenties when he built, rebuilt, raced and wrecked a few cars, it was a trip down memory lane for him. There's a '90 convertible Corvette in the garage now. And as much as I appreciate wandering around looking, we have been to many car shows over the years, this was definitely sensory overload.

Coastal Highway runs past all the hotels, motels, restaurants, t-shirt shops and other places that want your money. There are traffic lights every block which gave the hot rods and street machines just enough time to go through a couple gears and leave some rubber before they had to shut it down for the next light.

The noise was incredible but it was fun to watch. I much prefer to watch the cars moving rather than sitting in a parking lot with the hoods up. Yeah, that's a lot of chrome but how fast does it go? The smell of testosterone was everywhere or maybe it was just exhaust. I felt like I was in a scene from American Graffiti.

Here are a few of the many photos I took. Whether you care about cars or not, you have to admit that the work and money that goes into these machines is pretty awesome.

So it wasn't the quiet few days at the beach we were expecting but it was fun. We heard there is a Bike Week in Ocean City in September when about 10,000 bikes and 200,000 people show up. We'll skip that. I've been to Laconia, and Paul goes every year.

Maybe we'll make Ocean City Cruisin' an annual event.

Summer Stock Sunday

Here's our first taste of summer at the end of May. Summer here in the Northeast hasn't been anything to write home about, but we started off with a week on the gorgeous beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This year we made sure we brought our 4x4 and did some tooling along the beaches. So cool! Then just pick a spot and back into the dunes and relax. I'm not a big beach person back home but this is pretty hard to resist.

This is for a meme called
Summer Stock Sunday. If you’d like to participate, post a picture of anything that says summer to you, and link back to Around the Island so that other folks can find you. Have fun with it, and take time to visit the other blogs to see what summer looks like all over the world

Adventures on OBX

I'm baa-ack! I hope someone missed me. Went to see my new friends, the Wild Horses of Corolla, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This little guy was sitting right along side the road, didn't seem to care that I was pointing a camera in his direction.

Supposedly these wild horses are descendants of mustangs brought by the Spaniards in the 16th century. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was formed in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens to heighten awareness about the presence of wild horses in the area. They are protected and fines can be imposed for feeding, approaching or disturbing them in any way. The only way to visit them is across the beach via 4-wheel drive. They can be somewhat elusive but we had no trouble locating several groups including this little one.

After riding around looking for horses we spent the rest of the day just hanging out on the beach reading, fishing, picnicing and just plain relaxing! It was heavenly. We did that a few times during our stay on OBX. I'm not much of a beach person being a redhead and a burner rather than a tanner but I could get used to this!

A Gift! For Me? How sweet.....

My husband, Paul, came home Monday afternoon with a gift for me. He came in with a plain box saying "I was going to wrap it but if you don't care....." Of course I didn't mind and eagerly took the box.....an Emergency Safety Hammer!!

And not just any Emergency Safety Hammer....a deluxe model equipped with flashlight and mounting bracket! The instructions say "use pointed end to strike the glass in case passengers are locked or trapped inside vehicle. Use cutter blade to cut the seat belt in case of emergency." Now before you say, "oh god, Paul's in trouble. What kind of man gives his wife a gift of an emergency safety hammer," let me tell you that I was very pleased! I have ALWAYS wanted one of these! Honest!! Not that a piece of jewelry wouldn't also have pleased me but this was a GOOD gift. He knew I would like this.

I have very few phobias. I'm not afraid of spiders (I don't like them but I'm not afraid) or snakes (I think they are very cool) or mice (they're only THIS big?!) or bats (mice with wings, very cool!) I'm not afraid of most of the usual things that tend to make women scream and run out of a room. BUT I am afraid of being trapped in a car under water. You hit the water, the electrical system shorts out and the electric windows don't work! Down you go. So driving over a body of water on a bridge makes my heart palpitate. I've reported this phobia to friends who say "but you used to be a scuba diver!" True enough. So put my tank and regulator in the car with me and I won't be as afraid. Not very convenient.

We have a time share in Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Last May was our first time there, and we drove the coastal route south which took us over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. TWENTY-THREE miles of Bay Bridge-Tunnel! And guess who was driving that leg of the trip down as Paul napped?! But I was cool, I can handle this. By the end of it, I was driving 80 miles per hour! Get me off this {bleeping} bridge!!!

But this year, I am set to go. I will have my trusty Emergency Safety Hammer with flashlight nearby in the car, and I will feel much safer. Like the package says It could save your life! I'm counting on it. And if the bridge really gets to me, I can always hit myself in the head with the hammer and sleep the rest of the way!
