Come On In!

Do you have a GPS or Navigational System in your car? You know, one of those gadgets that are either onboard your car when you buy it or an after market device you add like a Garmin or TomTom.

If you do, does it have a HOME button or setting? Do you have your home address in there? Yes?

Next question--do you have an automatic garage door opener on your house? With the remote clipped to the sun visor in your car? Yes?

Okay, so if someone steals your car then sets your GPS to HOME it will direct them to your house. And when they get to your house, assuming you're not home 'cause you're stuck at the mall where your car was stolen from, if they press the button on your garage door opener, they can drive right into the garage, right?

That's what I thought. Even if your interior door between the garage and the house is locked, they have time to find a way to get into your house.

You have 1) given them an automatic route to your house and 2) given them a key to get inside.

Just thought you might like to know, because THEY know.

I've never thought about that... Wasn't there a movie recently about this sort of thing? With Shia LeBeef?

Thanks for the reminder, though I don't think I've programmed my GPS unit with our new home address.

If someone did steal our car/GPS, it'd likely take them two hours away, in the opposite direction.

Holy Moly! I never thought of that. Of course, I'm so technologically challenged that I don't have a GPS, but I will keep this in mind for the future. Thanks for the warning.

Hmm. Going to the mall is riskier than I thought. Thanks for the heads up!

I don't have a GPS but I do have my address on the information in my glovebox. (have you ever put gloves in there?) So are you saying we should carry our garage remote with us. I guess it's a good thing that I seldom leave my house!!

I read this somewhere else, but think about it, in most cars is the registration, and a thief can easily locate it and go to your house, it's possible they have their own GPS or iPhone with map.

Our GPS's do not have a home address listed. But, I don't freak out about things like that anyway.

Really, there's a Home button on a GPS? So glad I know the way. Usually.
I knew there was another reason I had to stay sober until I drove home.

Kidding aside - is there a way to take the home address out? Don't have one (a GPS) Just wondering.

I have read of this before, but I wondered if most people have their car registration in their glove box, which also has their home address on it. Sure, the thief would have to find the house himself, no GPS to get him there, but it's doable!

We don't have GPS devices in any of our vehicles, and no garage door openers out here on the Kansas prairie either, because the "standing" garage is a piece of crap! We were just talking a few weeks ago about how to fix it up.... another big project!
